This won't work for every single movie or TV show, but the hope is that most users will be able to transfer their UV copy to a partnering retailer service, like Flixter or Kaleidescape. Digital HD with UltraViolet lets you watch your movies anytime, anywhere Your UltraViolet account is FREE Download and play your Digital HD with UltraViolet. The UltraViolet website currently has the option to log in and link your account to participating retailers. That impressive library will soon be gone, although there is an alternative method in place for heavy users to preserve their digital libraries. Over the years, UV users had access to over 300 million films and TV episodes.

The cloud-based film collection service gave Blu-Ray buyers a chance to build their digital libraries up and get used to the idea of digital-only content before transitioning over completely from physical discs. UltraViolet was one of the first digital home entertainment services. Ideally, Movies Anywhere could expand to start working with TV shows in addition to movies.Earlier this year, it was announced that UltraViolet would be shutting down at the end of July. Unfortunately, while Movies Anywhere syncs your movies between different platforms, it doesn’t help with any TV shows you’ve synced from UltraViolet to Vudu. UltraViolet was always clunky and hard to use, and it has since been supplanted by the superior Movies Anywhere service (see “ Movies Anywhere Frees Your Films From Platform Lock-In,” 14 October 2017). The service, which let you store licenses for movies and TV shows online, has existed since 2011 and will shut down on 31 July 2019, rendering any licensed content there inaccessible. The Hollywood studios have finally given up on their UltraViolet digital rights locker.
